Hanalei Bay takes the early lead in Jackalope Cup; a strong showing by Granite Bay has them in the mix

December 16, 2017 by Empire Polo

A new Granite Bay lineup (Cameron Smith, Eric Hammon, Victor Soto and Alonso Andrade) made immediate waves in the opening two chukkers of Saturday’s opening round of round-robin play in the 2017 Jackalope Cup at the Eldorado Polo Club by playing Hanalei Bay (Krista Bonaguidi, Ron Bonaguidi, Ashton Wolf and Alvaro Tadeo) to a 3-3 tie.

Krista Bonaguidi scored the first goal of the day on a 30-yard penalty conversion, 1-0, that was countered by a goal from the field from Granite Bay’s Eric Hammon, 1-1.  Alvaro Tadeo took the lead back for Hanalei Bay with his first goal of the day, 2-1, but Granite Bay continued to battle.  Hammon’s second goal of the chukker had the teams all even at 2-2 after the opening seven minutes of play.

Snow-capped mountains set a majestic backdrop for the polo action at the Empire Polo Club.

Tadeo scored the first goal of the second period as Hanalei Bay see-sawed their way back into the lead, but it was not to be.  A determined Granite Bay attack managed to break through the Hanalei Bay defenders, with Cameron Smith scoring the final goal of the wo-chukker mini-match for a 3-3 draw.

The addition of Alonso Andrade appeared to be just what the Granite Bay team needed as a concerted offensive effort resulted in a goal from the field from Victor Soto for the early lead against defending champion, Pheasant Hollow (Deb Vermoch, Eileen Duffy, Carlos Galindo and Tim Rudy), 1-0.  Consecutive goals from Debra Vermoch, Tim Rudy (60-yard penalty conversion) and Carlos Galindo, however, had Pheasant Hollow on top of a 3-1 score as the chukker ended.

Hanalei Bay’s Ashton Wolf supplied three goals in Saturday’s Jackalope Cup action.

Soto and Galindo traded goals in the fourth period of the day, as Pheasant Hollow continued to hold a two-gal advantage, 4-2, when the momentum shifted.  After having suffered late loses in last week’s competition, Granite Bay supported back-to-back goals from Andrade with a solid defensive effort that left the game all even at 4-4 at the end of the contest.

The final two periods of the day saw Hanalei Bay securing their first win of the season over Pheasant Hollow in a nip-and-tuck match.  Rudy scored the first goal of the final mini-match of the day, 1-0, when the Hanalei Bay defense stepped it up.  A single goal from Ashton Wolf was the only other score in the chukker, 1-1, and both teams rode off the field for fresh mounts for the final period of the day.

A goal from Ron Bonaguidi opened the last chukker of the afternoon with Wolf adding two more goals.  Granite Bay got single goals from Rudy and Galindo, but it was Hanalei Bay with the 4-3 lead as the chukker ended.

Granite Bay had their best showing of the young season as they tied both Hanalei Bay and Pheasant Hollow in head-on-head competition on Saturday.  Hanalei takes a 4-3 lead (against Pheasant Hollow) and a 3-3 tie with Granite Bay into Sundays finals round of play.  Pheasant Hollow, the winner in the first two tournaments of the month (Desert Challenge and Coyote Classic) finds itself on unfamiliar ground with one tie and one loss after the first day’s action.

In Round-robin play, all the teams will play one another for another two chukkers with the totals from Saturday being added to the goals scored on Sunday.  The team with the best record will take the cup.

Jackalope Cup play is scheduled to get underway in a round-robin format, once again.  Competition will kick-off on the Empire Polo Club’s Field 7 at 11:30AM.

The final four-goal tournament of the month, the Holiday Cup, is scheduled to be played at the Empire Polo Club on Saturday, December 23rd.  The two-day competition will conclude on Saturday, December 24th

Hanalei Bay opened Sunday’s competition against Seattle and put up three unanswered first chukker goals.  Alvaro Tadeo scored the first goal of the day followed by a 30-yard penalty goal from teammate Krista Bonaguidi.  Ashton Wolf closed out the period with a goal from the field for a 3-0 advantage.

Cameron finally got Settle on the scoreboard with a goal in the second.  Krista Bonaguidi added a second penalty goal (30-yards) to end the mini-match with Hanalei Bay riding off with the win, 4-1.

Seattle remained on the field for the next two chukkers of play, facing Saturday’s front runner in Pheasant Hollow.

A penalty goal from Deb Vermoch accounted for all of the scoring in the period as neither team managed to mount an effective attack.  The chukker ended with Pheasant Hollow on top, 1-0.

Goals from Carlos Galindo and Tim Rudy extended the lead to 3-0 s Seattle struggled to find an answer to the Pheasant Hollow defense.  Vermoch added another penalty goal to close out the chukker for a 5-0 shutout.

The final showdown of the tournament pitted Pheasant Hollow against Hanalei Bay in a rematch of Saturday’s final chukkers of play.

Pheasant Hollow’s Carlos Galindo led all scoring with seven goals in the two -day tournament.

A 60-yard penalty conversion from Ashton Wolf and a goal from the field from teammate Alvaro Tadeo had Hanalei Bay in the driver’s seat, 2-0, as the first of the final two periods of the tournament got underway.  Galindo and Rudy scored consecutive goals to tie it at 2-2, with Deb Vermoch scoring the final goal of the period on a penalty goal for a 3-2 advantage.

Galindo scored his second goal of the mini-match that was followed by a 40-yard penalty conversion.  A stubborn Pheasant Hollow defense held Hanalei Bay scoreless over the balance of the match, with Pheasant Hollow riding off with the 5-2 victory.

The 2017 Desert Challenge was played in a round-robin format, with each team playing the other teams for two consecutive chukkers.  The totals from Saturday were combined with Sunday’s results with Pheasant Hollow taking first place with a two-day total of 18 goals (9 from Saturday).  Hanalei Bay finished the tournament with 13 goals (7 from Saturday) goals with Seattle finishing third with a total of 6 goals (Seattle scored 4 goals on Saturday and received a one goal handicap over the two-day tournament).  Pheasant Hollow’s Carlos Galindo was the tournament high-scorer with seven goals.

The Desert Challenge is the first of four consecutive 4-goal tournaments which will be followed by the Coyote Cup, the Jackalope Cup and the Holiday Cup.

Seattle’s Cameron Smith scored twice on the day.

The three-team round-robin began with Hanalei Bay (Krista Bonaguidi, Ron Bonaguidi, Ashton Wolf and Alvaro Tadeo) jumping out to an early 3-0 lead over Seattle (Cameron Smith, Suki Piper, Victor Soto and Goyo Mariscal) and running off with the 4-2 victory in the opening two chukkers of the tournament.

Carlos Galindo led the scoring on the day with four goals as Pheasant Hollow recorded two first wins in the opening day of play for the 2017 Desert Challenge at the Empire Polo Club Saturday afternoon.

Desert Challenge II Polo Tournament Results
Empire Polo Club
Nov. 27 and 28th, 2010

Rancho Remuda wins 4-Goal Final. Cybel Jordan, Kim Kelly, Roxy Keyfauver, Manny Rodriguez.
Atlant won the 1-Goal Finals. Conrad & Bolko Kissling, Jerod Sheldon and Ernesto Bautista.

INDIO –Rancho Remuda defeated WrightWay in the Desert Challenge II four-goal  final 8-8 on net goals Sunday, sidelining Parklane for the trophy presentation in the round robin match. Rancho Remuda put away Parklane 12-5 and Parklane went south of WrightWay 7-4 over the two-day tournament.

Two-goaler Manny Rodriguez put away six goals for Rancho Remuda in the match, while teammate and forward Roxy Keyfauver scored two. Rancho Remuda trailed WrightWay Saturday 5-3 but better defense allowed Rodriguez two penalty conversions Sunday– and strong passing put back-to-back goals on the boards for him late in the third chukker.

“We tried to get the ball to Manny for the goals,” said Keyfauver. ”When he connected he rode like a fireball from hell.”

Speaking for Parklane, Ashton Wolf said a little more “pep in the step,” might have pushed them into  better position.

“A little more hustle would have been good, buy hey, whenever I looked around, all I saw were reds,” meaning WrightWay’s Rob Yackley, Jared Sheldon and Ray Rosario. “I had Yackley behind, Jared on the side and Ray riding up…”

WrightWay headed off sound attempts by Parklane (3-2) and Rancho Remuda  on Saturday on five goals by Rob Yackley, just off the DL.

“Easy, I was really only off for one day,” Yackley said, after sustaining some facial fractures during a match at Empire’s Open House weekend.

In the one-goal tournament final, Atlant rolled past Pablo’s Mallets 9-2, on a team effort by all players.

“We worked together really well, and that’s how it comes together. Everyone scored,” said Jared Sheldon, the team’s No. 4.

It didn’t play that way for Pablo’s Mallets, who chalked the game up to a lesson learned.

“The ball bounced against us in all directions,” said Cameron Smith, Pablo’s Mallets quarterback. “Our back shots went right in to the other team—they were the only ones there,” he said.

Next weekend at Empire Polo Club is the Coyote Classic one-goal and four-goal tournaments. Team sign-ups are being accepted until Friday at noon, according to Vicky Owens, polo manager.
