Steel Magnolias took home the silver in the 4-goal Rose Cup Finals on Sunday, Feb. 24th at Empire Polo Club. In a well-matched game against Empire 4 (Rob Scapa, Gina Padilla, Charlie Petersen and Carolyn Anier) Steel Magnolias took an early lead winning the first chukker 3-0. The Steel Magnolias squad included Lyn Cobb, Susie Dix, Joseph Stuart and Santos Areolla. Santos Areolla scored the first goal, followed by two more goals put through the uprights by Joseph Stuart. Susie Dix and Lyn Cobb did their job well and helped keep the path clear to goal for Stuart and Areolla.
Empire 4 came back strong in the second chukker and closed the gap leaving a one-point lead in place for Steel Magnolias. Rob Scapa, Gina Padilla and Carolyn Anier made some great plays and assisted Charlie Peterson who scored two goals from the field in the second chukker and one in the third. Empire 4 came into the fourth chukker trailing behind by one point. Both teams fought hard and left the field without scoring any goals during the period. Empire 4 put the pressure on with a goal scored by Peterson to tie-up the game in the fifth chukker. The goal was unanswered by Steel Magnolias taking the game into sudden death overtime.
Steel Magnolias are a tenacious team and they were not ready to let go of a win. Empire 4 was charged up to make a run for the final point, but they were unable to contain Stuart who scored the winning goal to take Steel Magnolias to the trophy stand with a final score of 5-4.
